Drawing and Design Course Syllabus for Fall 2008            C. Williams



2 SEPT,
First day of class. Class policies, student responsibilities, syllabus & evaluation, and artist write up & critiques.

3 SEPT to 12 SEPT   
LINE: A look and discussion on the basic element in creating art. Projects include: various contour line drawings.
    > Cave paintings
> Blind contour drawing lecture
    > Non drawing hand contour drawing/single line
    > Simple still object lecture/drawing

15 SEPT to 9 OCT 
VALUE: Creating volume or the illusion of mass through shading. An introduction and exploration of charcoal and pen & ink media. Projects include: shading an object in charcoal, pen & ink, and grid project.
    > demo & practice
> white object
    > grid project
    > scratch board simple object/demo

10 OCT to 17 OCT 
OIL PASTELS: an introduction and exploration of oil pastels, and texture techniques. Drawing and painting from a simple still life.
> fruit with various techniques including a border, background and foreground

20-21 CRIT OIL PASTEL

22 OCT to 6 NOV
SOFT PASTELS: An introduction and exploration of soft (aka: chalk) pastels, and texture techniques. Drawing and painting a cropped image from a still life using a view-finder. Introduction to COLOR THEORY and the color wheel.

7-10 NOV
    Critique of soft pastel project.

12 NOV to 25 NOV 
WATERCOLORS: an introduction and exploration of watercolors, and texture techniques.  Also included, a look and discussion about SPACE. Drawing and painting from a reference resource with an emphasis of negative vs. positive space.
> simple color wheel and value scale; 14th Nov (demo)
> using a reference resource for main idea, design the positive space to be negative and vice versa, incorporating texture techniques into the design.

1-2 DEC
    Critique of watercolor painting.

3 DEC to 16 DEC
1 POINT and 2 POINT perspective: Creating the illusion of 3D by using set points in space. Build a cityscape or an interior scene in 2 PT perspective with given parameters.

17-18 DEC
CRITIQUE Perspective project

19 DEC
    Choose pieces to hang and finalize/make up projects, miscellaneous project - clean up

22 DEC to 2 JAN
    WINTER BREAK! Relax, eat lots, have fun, sketch.

5 JAN to 8 JAN
Prepare to hang show. Make labels. Catch up days or special project, metal and glass.

9 JAN, EVENING – Art and Chamber Music

12 JAN
    Take show down, make up work, finalize portfolios. Turn in portfolios.

13 JAN
Make up work, finalize portfolios. Turn in portfolios.

14-15 JAN
    Inventory and Clean-up; Pictionary.

16 JAN
    Review Day, no art class.

20 JAN to 23 JAN
FINALS
