World Languages @ CPS

The Language Department offers instruction in four languages: French, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish. Four-year-sequence programs are offered in all four languages; in these courses every student is expected to learn to read, write, and, in the case of French, Japanese, and Spanish, to understand and speak with reasonable fluency. The courses are designed to enhance the students’ understanding and appreciation of the linguistic, cultural and socio-economic diversity among the speakers of each language. Advanced-level courses in French, Latin, and Spanish prepare students for Advanced Placement examinations. Although studying three years in one language satisfies the requirement for graduation, studying four years is strongly recommended and undertaken by most of our students. In rare cases, two years of two languages may satisfy the requirement. At CPS, two foreign languages can be studied concurrently.
