Athenian Meet Recap

Written by Chelsea (soph)

April 3, 1988:

The young and hip parents of your College Prep swim team woke up to sunny skies, and quickly leaped into their spandex workout clothes. As our parents trotted off to their local aerobics class, maybe they hoped that one day their children would follow suit.

20 Years Later
Your College Prep swim team rose to greet the day. It was a normal morning, sunny and brisk (perfect for an 80’s aerobics class). One by one, they realized that today was not like any other day. Come four o’clock your swimmers would be sharing the pool with the Athenian Owls of Danville. Once this realization struck, the team decided to follow in their parents footsteps by dawning spandex leggings and dancing through the day because nothing makes you swim fast better than an 80’s workout.
Once they arrived at the pool, your College Prep swim team got into formation. They danced, kicked, and rolled their shoulders until beginning warm up. By the time the Owls arrived at the pool, College Prep was in the water preparing for a great meet.
The team was delighted to see that Jaya came out to cheer for her second College Prep meet of the season. We love having this kind of devoted fan.
The girls swam an amazing meet. The 200 Medley relays took 1st and 2nd (Michelle, Sophie, Sara, Callie; Chelsea, Cat, Julie, Emily). Sophie helped capture this relay despite shoulder injuries. Next Alice and Sara took 1st and 2nd in the 200 Free. Both Alice and Cat swam season best times in the event. Michelle and Julie won 1st and 2nd in the 200 IM (they raced each other to the end and only finished half a second apart). Sterling and Emily took 1st and 2nd in the 50 free. When Alice and Sara decided to take on the 100 Fly the outcome was magnificent. They won 1st and 2nd place, and Alice swam a lifetime best of 1:04.7! Chelsea, Emily and Carol swam the 100 Free and took 1st and 2nd place. Emily’s amazing swim and impeccable race plan earned her a lifetime best (1:04.5). Michelle and Callie won 1st and 2nd in the 500 Free. Callie swam a personal best of 6:10.44! Next came the 200 Free relay which won 1st and 3rd (Sterling, Emily, Julie, Alice; Carol, Sara, Cat, Micaela). After that Julie and Callie won 1st and 2nd in the 100 Back. Next Sterling and Cat won 1st and 4th in the 100 Breast. Cat swam another lifetime best (1:35.6). The meet finished off for the girls with the 400 Free Relay taking 1st place with a season best time of 4:02.2 (Michelle, Alice, Callie, Sterling). The girls won the meet 108 to 61, and filled the pool with personal bests and amazing achievements.

The boys were going up against a much larger Athenian team. However, they swam one of their strongest meets of the season. The boys 200 Medley relay took 1st place (Ryan, Jon, Brett, Grant).  Jon and Grant took 1st and 2nd in the 200 Free. Brett swam his first lifetime best of the day in the 200 IM (2:32.0). Ryan took first in the 50 free with a season best of 25.0. Grant and Adarsha both swam season bests in the 100 Free. Grant won the race with a time of 57.2, while Adarsha cut 9 seconds off his previous best time for a 1:18.3! Ryan won the 100 Back with a 1:05.2. Brett claimed the 100 Breast with his second lifetime best of the day (1:13.7)! This was a close race, but Brett out touched the Owl next to him by less than a second in order to take first place. The boys finished the meet by taking 1st in the 400 Free relay. The boys ended up losing 66 to 74. However, this loss came down to numbers not speed and the Athenian team definitely had the advantage when it came to the number of boys on their team.

As is tradition on the last home meet of the season, your College Prep swim team ended the day by throwing all three of their coaches into the drink. This was Emily and Sophie’s last home meet at CPS, we love these captains and are so glad that their last home meet was so spectacular.
