A GLORIFIED WORKOUT INDEED!

Camaraderie and support, long the foundations of Prep track and field teams, were clearly and vibrantly on display at the Twilight Relays, held Saturday, March 8, at San Rafael High School.  The first competition of the season, amidst D-I thru D-V schools, was packed with incredible enthusiasm, do-it-for-the-team-ness, excitement, and revelry in one another’s successes – small and large.  Both contingents of the 2008 team – a large pack of rookies and another of veterans – forged into a united squad as the meet progressed, an undeniably important development as we go into league competition this week.  The coaches couldn’t have been prouder of the flexibility the athletes showed as relay squads required regular reassembling and the runners’ no-quit attitudes, especially those who found themselves racing virtually alone in the gaps.  And what a remarkable overall collection of pieces!  The heart-fueled efforts were inspiring.  The aggressive get outs.  The mid-piece adjustments.  The universal grit and focus of everyone’s finishes.   The human side of putting one’s arse on the line was also vividly on display – the fears, the nerves, and the overwhelming sense of being in a challenging situation of unknown resolution.  And the full spectrum of consequent feelings from results – both the abundant joys and the many fewer pains – was there.  The sense of “I could have raced better”, the most unforgiving of all regrets, made its seasonal debut as well.  Aim to minimize it, tracksters.  Rookies, you now have a baseline from which to work.  Vets, ‘twas great to see you back in action again.  Let’s not get into too much detail about those port-a-potties, however…

You had to be there to realize the marvelous wonder of it all.  Congrats to everyone!

Noble Fight.  New Frontier.  No Fear.

Thank you to the many parents and fans that came out to cheer on the squads.  And for the oh-so-appreciated food and refreshments!

And one final happy birthday wish to Harvey…

Thank you Charmaine, Sydney, Alice, and Ian for getting stats.  Handoff-to-handoff splits.  Don’t sweat the math…
