“I FEEL LIKE I’M GIVING BIRTH THROUGH MY…”
Saturday, March 22
The Martinez Relays once again provided another glorified workout on the beautiful hill-encased track facility of Alhambra High School. A l-o-n-g relay meet on a dry and unseasonably warm day (this is more the norm than not; sunburned shoulders always seem to walk away from this meet) provided ample opportunity for Prep’s Finest to showcase their stuff. Perspective is critical, and here are two factors to keep in mind when reviewing the results. We are invariably the smallest school represented at this meet, and the random heat draws generally tend to work out – we do fine among all levels of competition – but there are those draws where Prep athletes find themselves trailing early and by a lot. We coaches never want to set you up to get your self-esteems battered, and we really appreciate your heart and courage in such circumstances. Secondly, our troops put in lots of pieces apiece, meaning that 3rd and 4th events are being run against athletes from larger programs doing their 1st pieces of the day. Again, perspective is important. Increased racing experience is always an asset, and hanging out together for a long day of warm-ups, putting on the spikes or throwing shoes, competing, and cooling down is good stuff. In spite of feeling baked, I totally loved observing the Prep track and field experience. It was also cool to overhear conversations among other coaches about who are those Prep kids?, and where is the school?, and how big is it? after many fine heat showings amongst the D-I and D-II monsters. Kudos to all! Remarkable flexibility and willingness shown at the meet, with a nod to Julia M, Monita, Collin, Tyler P, Tyler H, J Moss (Mr. 6 events?), Jacob, and Daniel.
It went like this…
7:00 a.m. Phone call: no bus. Arg.
8:00 a.m. Three vans full of athletes are off, and get through the lone open bore of the Caldecott in spite of a stalled truck.
8:30 a.m. We arrive; it’s already warm. Sunscreen applied. “PF” applied much to Lena’s anatomical glee.
Our first event doesn’t happen for quite awhile. We have yet to time this meet quite right, but too early is better than too late.
[Thank you Sarah E, Monita, Hayley, Sydney, and Maya for getting stats. Handoff-to-handoff splits. Don’t sweat the math… No official results/times at press time, so overall placing is mysterious except for the three top five teams.]

Next competition:
Tuesday, April 22, at BAC Meet #2 at City College of San Francisco.
This is very far off, so we will have some intrasquad competition prior to Intraterm. Details to follow…
