PREP TRAINS THROUGH IT AND STILL MEETS EXPECTATIONS AT STANFORD!

Saturday, September 27
The annual trip to the ever-cool Stanford Invitational, run on the manicured lawns of the Stanford golf course, was a bit different this year as meet management combined division IV and V schools instead of each having its own race.  The 5K course was also different for a third straight year.  The combined divisions meant more competition and a reduced chance of bringing home a team plaque, medals or t-shirts, but the meet served as an excellent work out on a fabulous course as well as an early season opportunity to take stock on how D-V shapes up.  Addressing the latter: given the heavy training workload during the week leading up to the meet, we weren’t emphasizing team placing.  Ah, but the mighty Prep squads finished right where we would have predicted within the NCS competition.  Packing was the tactical theme going into the meet – that’s hella tight packing, I might add.  For the boys, particularly considering Aviv’s absence, the spread was pretty even, whereas for the girls, particularly considering Sarah’s raw conditioning, it was a tale of two packettes – not ideal, but workable.  But hey, there were only bruised egos and no new injuries, so what’s not to like?  The Big Picture says the meet went fine.  And as September comes to an end, I’d say this season is off to a hella tight start.  Congrats to all!

RESULTS 3.1 mile course; mile splits/time/average mile split
BOYS D-IV/V RACE 242 runners total
16th    Charlie        5:14/16:35/5:21    An excellent start-to-finish piece
37th     Daniel        5:20/17:18/5:34    Generally liked his piece, but didn’t like having his name misspelled; “Hello, Alice?”
82nd     Tim        5:35/18:15/5:53    A fine piece given all the cross training he has to do; monster kick; excellent driving
109th     Julian        5:47/18:38/6:00    Mr. On and Off piece here; found a solid kick
111th     John        5:45/18:39/6:00    A very nice overall piece, with a gutsy kick; the campus irritated his Cal genes
172nd     Kristian        5:54/19:57/6:26    Stepped in beautifully for Aviv, but funky gut nagged him throughout the race
180th     Chris Mc    6:02/20:08/6:29    Bravely dealt with getting boxed early nightmare, but out of synch throughout

Team result: 14th overall, 3rd among NCS D-V teams, out of 36 total teams

GIRLS D-IV/V RACE 188 runners total
13th     Emily        6:11/19:48/6:24    An excellent piece from start to finish
18th     Kai        6:12/20:14/6:31    Rookie continues to excel in her longest race yet
26th    Adrienne    6:10/20:29/6:36    She’ll focus on the tail end, but I’ll focus on the bulk of it: a great race
106th     Cat        6:49/22:38/7:17    Two terrific miles, and then something of a wall
116th     Sarah E        6:50/23:03/7:26    No justice in the numbers here; great 1st half, then pure heart and no quit
119th     Sydney        6:57/23:05/7:26    Two terrific miles, and then something of a wall
130th     Lena        7:23/23:31/7:34    Tough head race day; consistency was there, though

Team result: 9th overall, 1st among NCS D-V teams, out of 24 total teams

Thank you, Haley and Aviv, for being supportive teammates and statisticians.
Thank you to the many families, friends, and alums that came to the meet!
Next race: the varsities go to Woodward Park in Fresno for the Clovis Invitational on Saturday, October 11th.
The entire team will race the following Tuesday, October 14th, at the BAC Challenge, which is run in Golden Gate Park.

Gotta love Nike!  Along with their “Who’s your daddy?” campaign, they brought Mad Libs into the XC world.  Check it out:
Dear _____, The time has come for us to find out what a _____ you are, and what a total _____ I am.  And because I am _____, I think we should settle it in a civilized manner.  A race.  Over the period of _____, we will see who makes it to _____ miles first.  And since you are also a _____, we’ll keep it fair by tracking our mileage at nikeplus.com.  Then, when this challenge inevitably proves that I am _____ and you are _____, we can go back being _____.   Love, _____  PS: _____
DON’T MESS!  GO PREP!
