Use of the Common Application

The Common Application is available online. This is one central application form that is accepted by hundreds of colleges nationwide, so that you can apply to many colleges with only one application. You may choose to use the Common Application if you are applying to two or more colleges whose names are listed at the top of the form. The common application is a time saver because the student fills out only one application and then sends photocopies of it to each college. Many institutions have added supplements to the common application that must be completed as well.

Note: Although colleges claim not to distinguish between candidates that use the college's own application form and those that use the common application, our feeling is that it is usually better to take the time to fill out the college's own application if they have one. If you do decide to use the Common Application, take special care to determine if the college has a supplemental form that needs to be completed (many colleges do). It is a good idea to maintain contact with the school if you are using the Common Application to 1) assure that you do not miss any important required documentation, and 2) demonstrate your interest in that college.
