Honoring Eric Di Michele

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Tonight, I had the honor of joining a group of New York coaches — and hundreds of Regis High School alumni — as we took part in a celebration honoring Eric Di Michele on the occasion of his twenty-fifth anniversary as coach of Regis’s Hearn Speech and Debate Society. Di Michele has been an incredible force in forensics since his first days as the “Boy Wonder” at Regis to his continued presence as an active and influential coach of one of the nation’s largest programs. Our younger readers in particular should know that Di Michele was one of the most successful early coaches in early Lincoln-Douglas debate and not only helped shape the activity, but helped it reach the level of recognition and competitive quality it enjoys today. (It goes without saying that he has done the same for Public Forum debate today.)

Matt Dunay, Ellen Noble Are Bump Champions

MONTROSE, N.Y. — The forty-third annual Malcolm A. Bump Memorial Tournament — one of the oldest and most storied continuously-running competitions in the activity — has concluded after the tournament distributed its traditional “crappy prizes” (and fine awards) to top-placing competitors in varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Public Forum debate.

Another tradition of the tournament is that the finalists are declared co-champions in lieu of a round. This year’s champions are the Bronx High School of Science’s Matt Dunay and Walt Whitman High School’s Ellen Noble. Congratulations to both debaters! (more…)
