College Prep Debaters Stage Presidential Debate On Tuesday, Oct. 19, five members of the College Prep Speech and Debate Team, along with Martin Marks' Presidential Elections class, staged a mock Presidential debate for the CPS community. Juliette M., who competes in Humorous Interpretation, served as the moderator for the debate. The Bush-Cheney team was played by Policy Debaters Jesse S. and Andrew L., respectively. Kevin K., another Policy Debater, played John Kerry, while Travis T., who competes in Humorous Interpretation and Duo Interpretation, stood in for John Edwards. This years debate was conducted as a Town Hall Meeting, with the candidates answering questions posed by students in the audience. Students in the Presidential Elections class designed the format, selected the questions, and prepared the setting, and Roger Wise of the Tech Department provided invaluable help with projections. The student debate, which Martin Marks has staged for every presidential election going back to 1980, was a big hit with students and faculty alike. College Prep Debaters Debate in the US Senate 2004 CPS graduates Chris S. and Daniel R. were invited to Washington, DC in July to debate in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The Center for SeaChange, a national ocean policy advocacy organization hosted Chris and Daniel, along with a team from Glenbrook North HS in Illinois, to reprise their debate from the final round of the National Forensic League Championship held in June in Salt Lake City. More information on the Center for SeaChange can be found at http://www.seachangecenter.org/ While in Washington the debaters toured the Capitol with a Justin Taylor (CPS '00), who was working in the office of Rep. Barbara Lee, met Sen. Diane Feinstein, met with lobbyists, and went on a behind-the scenes tour of the Smithsonian. Class of 2004 Produces Two National Finalist Debate Teams For the first time in school history, College Prep had teams in the final rounds of two national policy debate championships, the National Forensic League Championship in Salt Lake City, UT and the Tournament of Champions in Lexington, KY. Michael B. and Eli A. placed second in Kentucky this year, after being the first West Coast team ever to win the championship in 2003. They are the only team ever to debate twice in the final round of the Tournament of Champions. Chris S. and Daniel R., who reached the quarter-finals at the Tournament of Champions, reached the final round at the National Forensic League Championship in 2004. All four debaters plan to continue to debate in college. Michael B. and Daniel R. are attending the University of California at Berkeley. Chris S. attends Emory University in Atlanta, and Eli Anders is attending Harvard University. |
