CPS offers network storage spaces for every member of its community.
The computers on which this space is provided are called servers
which are in turn divided into volumes. Network storage
spaces can serve the following purposes:
- Sharing and remote access: By storing files on a central server,
you allow access to a resource from any location
a) on campus
b) off-campus through WebDav
- Security: Some storage areas have access restrictions based on the
User ID you use to log in. Placing items in these secure locations can
help you maintain privacy over your documents.
- Publishing Services: Some directories on our servers offer web publishing.
Items placed in these directories can be downloaded or viewed from any
computer connected to the internet.
-
Back-up services: People are encouraged to make their own private
backups of valuable documents. Many computers on campus are equipped
with CD burners to aid in that process. Automating utilities, such as
SilverKeeper on the faculty laptops, can help you with good backup
habits. We perform backups on much of our server data to help with
disaster recovery. Data is backed up to either:
a) Auxiliary Hard Disk
b) Off-site servers
There is a maximum amount of storage that each user can utilize on a
given server. That maximum is referred to as the server's "quota." |
