Content Types
An author on CPSWeb has many different content tools at her disposal. When creating content on this website, you'll need to select the type of content you will add. Each "content type" has its own special properties associated with it. The content types, their purpose, and their appearance are examined here.
In General
When you create a content type, you will be presented with a web-based form to describe the piece of content you are creating. Every form will have three basic fields for you to fill out:
| Field | pupose |
|---|---|
| short name | a content item's short name will be part of it's web address. If you are unsure how to make best use of it, then you should leave this field blank. |
| title | this descriptor will show up in site navigation, at the top of the browser, and at the top of the center pane. It should be brief |
| description | the description associated with your content type will show up in search results and when a user rolls his mouse over any links to your page |
Specific Content Types
In the following table, you can click on the content type's icon to see how the content type and each of its fields is displayed on this site.
| Content type | purpose/useage | special properties |
|---|---|---|
| An organizational container | Published folders show up in the navigation portlet on the left of the page. Folders can be set to display a default page, a list of its contents, or a photo album presentation of all of the pictures contained therein. | |
| A basic page of text (and possibly images, graphics, and applets, if you are comfortable with HTML) | Web pages can be selected as default content for a folder. If you choose to give them a short name, it should have ".html" at the end of it. | |
| A picture or a graphic | Images should always be given a title and a desciption. A folder filled only with images can be displayed as a photo album, a la Ofoto or Flikr. | |
| An organizational container for photos. | When filled only with photos, it displays as a photo album. If you give it a short name of "showcase" the photos that automatically appear on the right side of the page will be the photos contained in your "showcase" folder. Check out this document for more on the "showcase." | |
| Used for uploaded files that would not typically display in a browser. Word documents or PowerPoint shows would be uploaded using the "File" content type. | ||
| Like a webpage, but with a field that allows you to upload a picture and a caption. | News Items can automatically show up on the Home Page's News Portlet (pending approval by the site manager.) | |
| A calendar event with a start and finish time | CPSEvents are represented in the small calendar portlet, the master calendar, and in any CalendarX object created above the event in the website heirarchy. | |
| A calendar event that has no time associated with it, but has a start and end date (e.g. Winter Break) | CPSEvents are represented in the small calendar portlet, the master calendar, and in any CalendarX object created above the event in the website heirarchy. | |
| An annotated link to another website. | The title and description of a Redirect will show in a folder-listing view. When you click on a link to a redirect, it will take you to the site you specified when you created the content type. | |
| A folder that will gather content from other areas of the site based on criteria that you specify. | Wicked cool! | |
| Will display all CPSEvents or CPSUntimedEvents in the same folder or in subfolders in a tabular calendar view | This content type has a very specific purpose; the only attibutes you can assign it are a short name, a title, and a description. |
