Student Council
Student government at CPS is responsible for organizing student activities and representing student opinion in school-wide matters. Activities it is responsible for include dances, other student council sponsored evening events (movie nights, ice skating, casino night), and spirit week. It also has the larger responsibility, shared with student-faculty committees, of providing the leadership necessary to further the school's goals. Often student council members attend faculty meetings to provide student imput, and, when there are administration concerns, faculty attend sudent council meetings.
The Student Council is made up of 18 people: eight representatives (two from each class), a president, a vice-president, four committee heads (some with two heads for one committee), a secretary, and a treasurer. All positions are ellected except the offices of secretary and treasurer which are appointed by and at the discretion of the current president and vice president.
The four committees are Dance, Spirit, Community Service, and Environment. Each committee head(s) organizes a committee of members of the student body who, though they don't attend council meetings, deal with issues of that particular committee.
All students are welcome to attend the twice weekly council meetings and many do.
One recent activity was "Casino Night".
Casino night is an annual event started last year to raise money for the dance committee and to generally foster school spirit. The tables are manned by student council members, and activities include roulette, craps, poker, and black jack. Prizes are minial, but even a candy bar seems like a large victory after hours at the tables.
