History Teacher, Full-Time Position

The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time history teacher beginning September, 2006.  We seek candidates who have some teaching experience and some graduate training in history, who have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community, and who are eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment.  Teachers thrive at CPS when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit, diverse community.

The CPS history program requires year-long courses in World Civilizations (9th grade), Western Civilization (10th grade) and U.S. History (11th grade) of all our students.  In addition, the department offers two or three elective seminars each semester.  This position is likely to involve teaching World Civilizations and U.S. History. Candidates for this position should also have a strong background and an ongoing interest in the history and cultures of some non-Western peoples, as the position may eventually include the teaching of elective seminars.  The position is likely to require two preparations per semester for four classes that average 16 students in a section. The person will also take a proportional share of departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, most of them during the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. school day.

The salary is competitive.  Benefits include medical and dental coverage, a retirement plan, and most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch every day.  Please send cover letter and resume to Sharona Barzilay, Assistant Head, The College Preparatory School, 6100 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94618.  Fax Number: (510) 652-7467.  Email address: jobs@college-prep.org.  For more information about our school, visit our website at www.college-prep.org.
