Physical Science & Physics: One-Year Teaching Replacement

The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, CA, seeks a full-time teacher in our science program for the 2006-2007 school year.  The person selected will likely teach sections of Physical Science and Physics.  Candidates should have a good background in physics and a combination of teaching experience and graduate training in science. They should be prepared for the special claims of an independent school and for the commitment required by a demanding and rewarding academic environment.  Teachers thrive at CPS when they stir and share the intellectual energy and curiosity of our students and when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly-knit, diverse community.

The CPS science program includes three required yearlong courses:  Physical Science, taken in the freshman year, which interweaves physics and chemistry to provide a basis for further study of laboratory sciences; Chemistry, taken in the sophomore year; and Biology, taken in the junior year.  Beyond required courses, the vast majority of our students choose to take one or more science electives.  These include: Physics, A.P. Biology, A.P. Chemistry, A.P. Physics, and such semester electives as Genetics, Issues in Science, Animal Behavior, and Astronomy.  Science electives are most often taken by seniors.

Full-time teachers offer four classes per semester, each with approximately 16 students.  In addition, teachers take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, most of them during the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. school day.  The salary is competitive.  Benefits include medical and dental coverage, and, most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch each day.
