    The College Prep Debate Team is off to a fast start this season, earning significant victories in four competitions during the month of September. This year's team has tremendous breadth. We are large (over 70 debaters) and competitive in a range of events at the local, regional, and national level.

  • Prep Debate Teacher Awarded Fund for Teachers Fellowship

    Debate coach John Hines will be traveling to East Asia this summer to conduct research and visit various historical sites, thanks to a fellowship he received from Fund for Teachers, a Texas-based organization dedicated to offering professional and personal enrichment opportunities for teachers. Hines hopes to bring the knowledge and experiences imparted by his summer travels to the debate topic for the coming academic year: the US military deployment in the Middle East, Japan, and South Korea.

    Hines was among 11 Oakland teachers recognized with this distinguished award.

  • Eight College Prep Debaters Headed to National Championships

    Eight members of the College Prep Debate Team have qualified for two national championship competitions this spring. The first, the Tournament of Champions, is held on the first weekend of May at the University of Kentucky. Debaters qualify for the Tournament of Champions through their performances at a select list of competitions, similar to the way golfers qualify for the Masters. Approximately 70 entries qualify in each event at the TOC. The second, the National Forensic League Championship, is the oldest national high school championship in the United States. This year's competition will be held in Kansas City, MO. Debaters qualify for the NFL championship by winning the local district championship in their event.
