Application process

Dear Applicant:

The high school application process can be exciting, intimidating, self-affirming, confusing, or just about any other adjective you can think of. We are here to help! Admission to The College Preparatory School is based on grades, teacher recommendations, an interview, and the results of an entrance examination. In addition, special attention is paid to each student’s willingness to share and contribute to the lives of others.

We hope that you make good use of our website. It is an excellent place to learn about many aspects of College Prep. Despite the fact that the technology is in place such that you can apply online and download all application forms, we strongly recommend that you request a paper admission packet. In addition to all of the application forms, the packet contains a curriculum guide, a school profile, a viewbook, and more. The packet is a good place to write down questions and keep a checklist of your application progress. Packets are ready in the fall and may be requested by clicking here.

Most prospective College Prep students come to the school for a half-day visit during the Fall of their eighth grade year, complete the College Prep application, and participate in a brief interview with a member of the College Prep Admissions Committee. The following offers some guidance during this process.

Student Visits

We encourage all interested students to schedule a half-day visit at College Prep to sit in on classes and observe our community first hand. There is no better way to get a feel for College Prep than walking the grounds, observing classes, and talking to students and faculty members. You do not have to submit an application to visit College Prep. Please call Vanessa Ortega after September 22 to schedule your visit. At that time, please inform us if there are specific classes you would like to visit or if there is a particular host you would like to have show you around. To the best of our ability we will try to accommodate your requests.

Parent Tours

Parents of current eighth graders are invited to take a tour of campus to see the facilities and ask questions in a small-group setting. Tours will be held once a week, usually on Fridays from 11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., beginning October 10. Please call  (510) 652-4364 to reserve a space.

The Interview

As part of the admissions process, each applicant is required to meet with a member of the Admissions Committee. This interview is an opportunity for applicants to ask questions about College Prep and to discuss their interests and high-school goals. Please call Vanessa Ortega in the Admissions Office after September 22 to schedule an appointment for one of our interview days, Saturday, January 10, 2009 or Saturday, February 7, 2009. Please note, interviews will be conducted only for applicants who have submitted the Family Information Sheet along with the application fee.

Again, thank you for your interest in College Prep. Do not hesitate to call us if you should have questions. If you would like a member of the College Prep Diversity Committee to telephone you to discuss the program at College Prep, just let us know.
