Hello, College Prep alumni. I am Pete Harvey, class of 1999, and the new Chair of the Alumni Association.
While chatting with Chris Sun, the outgoing chair, the other day, we both expressed a bit of surprise at being asked to take on the role. Neither of us had attended every important event or gathering since we graduated. I’ve lost touch with some great people during my time there. And my path in life has taken me, at times, far from campus. But what I’ve noticed is this: I’m an increasingly proud alumnus. Not because the school has become more widely recognized, though it has. It’s that I’ve come to appreciate the gifts of a College Prep education more over time. Friends from my CPS days are still among my closest, and others have even become professional partners of late. The skills I honed on campus have also made me a better communicator—in my job, my marriage, and with my children. And the brand of critical thinking that CPS teaches helps us all to see the events of the world in sharper focus. That has becoming increasingly valuable these days.
My point is this: whatever space you have to connect with College Prep again—even if it’s as little as a text message—nurture it. And let the Alumni Association help you do so. I’ve found that as I’ve gotten closer to the school, it’s like growing closer to a campfire. The feeling is one of comfort, and you’ll like who you see around the circle.
Let me, or anyone else in the Alumni Association, know how we can help welcome you back.
