welcome alumni

As a College Prep graduate you are a member of the alumni community for life. The College Prep Alumni Office is dedicated to developing deeper relationships. Whether you are driven by the desire to reconnect with old friends, eager to mentor and collaborate with current College Prep students, or looking for opportunities to volunteer and give back to the school, we encourage you to stay engaged and nurture the bonds you share with each other and with the School.
Hello, College Prep alumni. I am Pete Harvey, class of 1999, and the new Chair of the Alumni Association.

While chatting with Chris Sun, the outgoing chair, the other day, we both expressed a bit of surprise at being asked to take on the role. Neither of us had attended every important event or gathering since we graduated. I’ve lost touch with some great people during my time there. And my path in life has taken me, at times, far from campus. But what I’ve noticed is this: I’m an increasingly proud alumnus. Not because the school has become more widely recognized, though it has. It’s that I’ve come to appreciate the gifts of a College Prep education more over time. Friends from my CPS days are still among my closest, and others have even become professional partners of late. The skills I honed on campus have also made me a better communicator—in my job, my marriage, and with my children. And the brand of critical thinking that CPS teaches helps us all to see the events of the world in sharper focus. That has becoming increasingly valuable these days.

My point is this: whatever space you have to connect with College Prep again—even if it’s as little as a text message—nurture it. And let the Alumni Association help you do so. I’ve found that as I’ve gotten closer to the school, it’s like growing closer to a campfire. The feeling is one of comfort, and you’ll like who you see around the circle.

Let me, or anyone else in the Alumni Association, know how we can help welcome you back.

Pete Harvey ’99
Chair, Alumni Association

  • STEM Research Program

College Prep's STEM program is for students interested in getting hands-on research experience in a broad array of STEM fileds (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). A cornerstone of the program is the summer internship, a four to eight week hands on placement in Labs, academic units, and both for- and non-profit entities across the Bay Area. We appreciate the assistance of College Prep alumni, parents, and their networks to help us find placements for them. The students are excited and well prepared to join a research lab or other type of team, having spent a semester learning about research ethics, decoding academic journals, and basic biostatistical coding, in addition to their other sciences classes. They have embedded with labs at UC Berkeley, UCSF, and many other institutions where mentors constantly sing their praises.
  • STOak

Social Transformations—Oakland (STOak) is a yearlong course that begins in the spring semester with a deep-dive into understanding Oakland’s past and present, with an emphasis on social movements. The core of the program is a six-week, full-time summer internship in the wider Oakland community within organizations working towards social or environmental justice. Students are paired with mentors to learn about how the organization operates and to support their mission. The program concludes in the fall when students share their experiences with one another and prepare a formal presentation for the wider College Prep community.
