Students Awarded Scholarships for College
The National Merit Corporation - through colleges and corporate scholarships - has offered six members of the graduating class of 2006 scholarships to attend colleges across the nation.
Neal Y. and Liza F. has been selected as recipients of National Merit Scholarships to attend Princeton University and Harvard University, respectively. Anupam B. and Meghan W. have been offered Merit Scholarship awards for The University of Chicago and Lauren B. for Carlton College. One student has also received a scholarship from a corporation: Ryan D. from Lockheed Martin Corporation Foundation to attend the University of California at Santa Cruz.
“This time of year the seniors are on the edge of their seats hoping to find out about scholarships for their college education. These six students have a lot to celebrate. Scholarships are given for outstanding academic achievement and will assist with college tuition. The three types of National Merit scholarships include: National Merit Scholarships – offered to students regardless of which college they attend; college-specific scholarships offered to students who have accepted places at that specific college, and corporate level scholarships offered through corporate sponsorships for promising students within their field,” states Marsha Gardner, College Counselor. “These students have maintained an impeccable academic record throughout their high-school career. We are thrilled to see them continue to college this fall with these scholarships in hand. We are grateful for the support of the National Merit Corporation.”
Students participate in the National Merit program each year, which is based on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in their junior year. High-scoring students receive a Letter of Commendation or are named as Semifinalists and later, Finalists. This year there are 21 Finalists among College Prep’s 78 seniors. Finalists may be offered scholarships, which are granted each spring.
