CPS Junior awarded scholarship to travel to Japan
CPS Junior, Katherine C. has been Awarded Oakland Rotary Club Student Exchange Program to Travel to Japan.
The Oakland Rotary Club Chairman, Peter Turner notifies Katherine C , her mother Mary Mead and teacher Atsuko Morse that she has been selected for the scholarship program.
CPS junior Katherine C., currently studying Japanese, has been awarded a scholarship to travel to Japan. The Rotary Club of Oakland and the Fukuoka Rotary Club selected Katherine as the eighth student delegate to travel to Fukuoka, Japan, Oakland's Sister City, she will receive a scholarship to cover travel costs for a 10-day visit with a Japanese host family.
To qualify for this program, Katherine had to satisfy criteria of being a current high-school junior, studying Japanese, and having the ability to reciprocate by hosting a Japanese student in the spring or summer of 2006 for 10 days. Other skills that are considered include an outgoing personality and strong self-confidence, together with a good command of Japanese.
“The language faculty at CPS and I personally feel privileged and honored to be included in this generous program from the Oakland Rotary Club. We look forward to future opportunities with the exchange program. It is a wonderful addition to our Japanese program,” states Atsuko Morse, Japanese teacher at CPS.
“Katherine has been given an extraordinary opportunity to put her studies to work by experiencing the Japanese culture first hand,” says Dr. Murray Cohen, Head of School. “We are truly honored to be Rotary’s partner in its scholarship program.”
Names of potential candidates from the CPS Japanese language program were submitted to the Rotary Club for consideration in June of 2004. CPS provides opportunities to study French, Spanish, Japanese and Latin and continues to seek opportunities for students to participate in exchange programs.
