Newly Formed Chess Team Wins BIG at State Championship

The recently formed College Preparatory School chess team, consisting of several players who had not participated in a tournament for several years, went to the State Chess Championship in San Mateo last weekend and did the school proud -- they returned home bearing a 3-ft. high trophy!  The tournament is primarily an individual championship, but has a team component as well.  The CPS team placed 3rd among all high schools in the state of California.  Sophomore Sam S. went undefeated in the tournament and finished as the top high schooler in the state.  Junior Kevin W. also played brilliantly, winning three rounds and drawing two, and ended up tying for 13th-best high schooler in the state.  Junior Eli B., who had not played in a tournament since 2000, won the top unrated-player prize.
