Student-led fundraising buys 1,000 books for Uganda Schools
Four junior girls from The College Preparatory School launched Uganda Awareness Week at CPS last March, after attending the Youth Philanthropy Worldwide conference (www.ypworldwide.org). From the money raised at CPS, YPW has been able to purchase over 1000 school and text books that will be used in schools in Northern Uganda. The books are going to be shipped early this month.
Through Youth Philanthropy Worldwide the students learned about children, aged 5-12 years old, who are kidnapped into the Lord Resistance Agency (LRA) to fight the war in Uganda. These children are forced to kill, and those that escape into refugee camps are permitted to hide from the conflict for only 45 days before they are forced back into the terrors of Uganda. The CPS students felt passionately about the forgotten crisis in Uganda and worked on a program to bring attention to the cause on campus by fundraising and writing to the US and Ugandan government representatives to plea for action to protect these children.
