Latin Scholars Recognized

Five top scholars of CPS Latin studies

College Preparatory School students Phoebe J.-B. and Noah B. have received the Oxford Classical Dictionary in recognition of high scores in the National Latin Exam for four years. In addition, three students have been named Level III Certamen winners at the recent California Junior Classical League convention.

“These five students have excelled in Latin studies both at the national level and at the state level. At the national level achieving four gold medals in four consecutive years on the National Latin Exam is a great feat. Phoebe and Noah have done consistently excellent work throughout their high-school careers, ” states Jeannie de Vries, Latin teacher at CPS. “Phoebe and Noah are both off to Harvard this fall. We wish them the best with their studies.”

The ACL/NJCL National Latin Exam, facilitated by the University of Mary Washington in Virginia, awards top scorers at each level with certificates and medals. Students compete in mid-March on a test, which includes questions on reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, mythology and history. More than 148,000 Latin students across the world took the 2006 exam. Four-time gold medal winners receive a copy of the Oxford Classical Dictionary. For more information: www.nle.org
