Students Pull Together to Raise Money for Hurricane Katrina
The College Preparatory School Will Never Forget the Wrath of Nature. After Surviving the Heart Of The 1991 Oakland Fire, Students Pull Together to Raise Money for Victims of Hurricane Katrina.
“Many of our students families were affected by the devastating fire of 1991, and we have not forgotten. We know what a neighborhood in ruin looks like, and watching and hearing about the devastation from Hurricane Katrina has touched us deeply. Each year we ask the students to prepare emergency supply boxes, because we know all too well that we have to be ready.” states Dr. Murray Cohen, Head of CPS “Even as school was beginning this year, our students quickly pulled together a series of events to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. "
Students produced a campus carnival followed by a fundraising lunch with supplies donated by Sodexho USA and local caterer, T. J.’s Gingerbread House, to raise money. This active awareness is consistent with the school’s outreach programs, including an annual OXFAM fundraiser, weekly tutoring at local schools, and cooking for Berkeley Women’s and Men’s Shelters. Students are encouraged as part of their rounded education to get involved in the community as good and engaged citizens.
The College Preparatory School, a culturally diverse 9-12 independent high school, is a community of students, teachers, and staff.
