Eleven Seniors Receive College Scholarships

Eleven seniors at Colleg Prep have received scholarships for college from the National Merit & Achievement Scholarship Programs for their academic excellence.

Charmaine H, Hannah S., and Paul R. have been selected as recipients of National Merit Scholarships to attend University of Pennsylvania, Williams College and MIT, respectively. Natalie P and Tiamoya F. have been offered National Achievement Scholarship awards for Barnard College and Williams College. Kevin K. will attend Claremont McKenna with a scholarship from the College.

“This time of year the seniors are on the edge of their seats hoping to find out about scholarships for their college education. These eleven students have a lot to celebrate. Scholarships are given for outstanding academic achievement and will assist with college tuition. The three types of National Merit scholarships include: National Merit Scholarships – offered to students regardless of which college they attend; college-specific scholarships offered to students who have accepted places at that specific college; and corporate level scholarships offered through corporate sponsorships for promising students within their field,” states Martin Bonilla, Director of College Counseling. “These students have maintained an impeccable academic record throughout their high-school career. We are thrilled to see them continue to college this fall with these scholarships in hand. We are grateful for the support of the National Merit and National Achievement Programs.”

Students participate in the National Merit program each year, which is based on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in their junior year.  High-scoring students receive a Letter of Commendation or are named as Semifinalists and later, Finalists. Finalists may be offered scholarships, which are granted each spring.
