Service & Community Based Learning

College Prep cultivates lifelong learners and engaged world citizens. Our Service and Community Based Learning Program provides opportunities for students to develop connections to Oakland and the greater Bay Area while also building the mindset and learning practical skills necessary to create a better world.

We are lucky to be located in the East Bay, with it’s abundant green spaces, rich legacy of community organizing, and vibrant diversity. Our students continually explore essential questions about their place in the world: How can we, as College Prep students, collaborate with local community partners to create a safer, healthier, and more just society? What unique contributions can we make to the work that is already being done? How do our community experiences connect to our work in the classroom? How can our academic pursuits add meaning and depth to our service?

service opportunities & academic partnerships

Each year offers new chances to develop a deeper understanding of classroom curriculum through experiences in the real world. Freshman participate in the maintenance of the Frog Park Playground and Rockridge-Temescal Greenbelt. Sophomores partner with Playworks, an award winning non-profit that provides full day play and physical education programing in low income schools. Juniors work with Save the Bay and the Presidio Land Trust as part of their Biology coursework. Senior leaders plan a day of giving back for their entire class.

In addition to grade-level community service, students can choose from a variety of ways to get involved in community work, including tutoring at Chabot Elementary School, cooking and serving meals at the Berkeley Food and Housing Project, and volunteering with Children’s Hospital Oakland.

community action team

The Community Action Team (CAT) consists of two students from each grade who plan and implement awareness-raising campaigns, fundraisers, and service opportunities for the entire school. Each semester CAT strives to make a wide variety of volunteer and organizing opportunities available to any interested members of our community. Past projects include: coordinating Light the Night Walk for Leukemia, urban gardening with Phat Beets, and work with the global medical non-profit MedShare.
