Application Process

The high school application process can be exciting, daunting, self-affirming, confusing, or all of the above. We are here to help!
Most College Prep prospective students begin the application process in the eighth grade. There is no better way to get a feel for our school than walking the grounds, observing classes, and talking to current students and teachers. We offer three fall programs—Open Houses, Parent Tours, and Student Visits—to help you and your family determine if College Prep is your best fit for high school. Ninth and tenth grade transfer students (seeking entry into grades ten and eleven) are also invited to register and attend our admission events with their families.

Once you decide to apply, your application provides the Admission Committee with an opportunity to learn about you, in and out of the classroom. The application includes a number of essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and standardized test scores that assist the Admission Committee in choosing students who will be a strong academic fit with the school, as well as be engaged and positive members of this dynamic learning community.

Our admission process is designed to help you clarify your academic, social, and extracurricular goals for high school. Whether you are applying for ninth grade, or as a transfer student, we look forward to learning about your talents, strengths, imperfections, and dreams. Thank you for considering College Prep.

Please note all our admission programs require advance registration. To create your Ravenna account, please start the process by clicking here

  • Student Visit

We strongly encourage all interested students to come for a half-day visit to College Prep. Since every child is different, a visit allows the student to observe classes and understand how the College Prep experience might suit him or her. The student’s College Prep application does not need to be complete in order to visit. Visits begin in late-September and conclude in December. In a typical week, we will host visitors both morning and afternoon on most days.

During our Student Visit, we match you with your host, a current Prep student, who will take you to classes and answer any questions you have about our community. You might even get to answer a math question, participate in an English discussion, or draw something in an art class!

    Please call Vanessa Ortega at (510) 652-4364 x1 after September 5, 2016
to schedule your visit. At that time, let us know if there are specific classes you’d like to visit or if there is a particular ninth grade host you would like to shadow. We try to accommodate your requests to the best of our ability, and we appreciate your flexibility if we cannot accommodate your original request. Classes at College Prep are small, and we are only able to accommodate a handful of visitors each day, so it’s helpful to have a few dates in mind when scheduling your visit. Due to limited visitation times, Student Visits are only open to current 8th graders and older.
  • Parent Tour

College Prep looks forward to partnering with our families in educating their students during this exciting time in their intellectual and personal development. Our Parent Tours allow parents and guardians to experience College Prep during a typical school morning and tour campus within a small group setting. Parents and guardians are invited to ask questions about College Prep’s philosophy, curriculum, and offerings guided by a member of the Admission Office staff. Parent tours are offered throughout the fall on most Tuesdays and Fridays. Advance registration is required (no drop-ins can
be accommodated) and can be completed through your Ravenna portal. Due to space limitations, Parent Tours are only open to families of current 8th graders and older.
  • Open House

College Prep hosts three Open Houses in the fall. Although Open House attendance is not required for admission, attending our Open House allows us to get to know one another and for you to experience College Prep in action.

Parents (guardians) and their children will have the opportunity to talk to teachers, current students, coaches, and administrators; attend mini-classes; and walk away with a better understanding of why College Prep might be a great fit for the student. Advance registration is required and can be completed through your Ravenna portal.

    Fall 2016 Open House Dates
    • Sunday, October 9, 2016
    • Saturday, November 12, 2016
    • Sunday, December 4, 2016
Please note: families and students do not need to have a complete application on file to attend an Open House. However, reservations are required and can be completed through our Ravenna application portal. Due to space limitations, the October and November Open Houses are restricted to families with students in the 8th grade or above. For families with 7th graders, please inquire with us after the Thanksgiving holiday (late November) about space availability for our December Open House.  Our reservation system will be live in late August 2016.
  • Testing

College Prep requires that all applicants take either the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) or the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) as part of the application process.

The College Prep admission office has no preference for either the ISEE and the SSAT and one or both results can be submitted for consideration.

    ISEE Information
You may register to take the ISEE exam beginning in September. The testing fee for the ISEE is $105. Information on the ISEE and what the test covers can be found through the ERB website.

Applicants should indicate on the ISEE registration form that The College Preparatory School is to receive your test scores. Our ISEE code number for is 052192.

The ISEE will be given at College Prep on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 9 am (check-in starting at 8:30 am).

Applicants need not take the test at College Prep; several test dates and local sites are available, and we encourage you to choose a date that works best for you and your family. Testing dates, sites, and registration deadlines are listed in the Student Guide under “East Bay Consortium.” Early registration is strongly encouraged as local test sites fill up quickly. Applicants must take the ISEE no later than January 31, 2017 for scores to be considered for the College Prep application.

A limited number of ISEE fee waivers are available for families with financial need. Please call the Admission Office at (510) 652-4364 to learn more about requesting an ISEE fee waiver.

    SSAT Information
You may register to take the SSAT beginning August 1, 2016. The testing fee for the SSAT is $127.

Students may take the SSAT at a number of Bay Area locations and the SSAT website provides information about testing location and dates. There are only four SSAT testing dates (all Saturdays) that occur in time for scores to be considered for the College Prep application:
    • October 15
    • November 12
    • December 10
    • January 7
Please note that the February 11 test date (and the dates following) is too late and will not be received in time for review. The registration deadline for each of these tests is three weeks prior to the test date. Early registration is strongly encouraged as local test sites fill up quickly.

Applicants should indicate on the SSAT registration form that The College Preparatory School is to receive test scores. Our SSAT code number is 2484.

A limited number of SSAT fee waivers are available for families with financial need. Please call the Admission Office at (510) 652-4364 to learn more about requesting an SSAT fee waiver.
  • Interview

As part of the admission process, each applicant must be interviewed by a member of the College Prep faculty community.

Our interview is an opportunity for applicants to ask questions about College Prep one-on-one and more broadly discuss their interests and goals for high school. The interview is always only one student with one interviewer and usually lasts around twenty-five minutes.

At College Prep, the interview occurs on a different day than the Student Visit. This allows for students to process their campus experience and consider more thoughtfully how College Prep is a good fit for them. Interviews will take place over three Saturdays:
    • Saturday, January 14, 2017
    • Saturday, January 21, 2017
    • Saturday, January 28, 2017
Interview time slots are available beginning at 9:00 am at every half an hour until 2:00 pm. We are happy to accommodate students who cannot make any of the above dates, and we offer a limited number of slots in December for students who have completed their College Prep application and paid the application fee.

Once you begin the online application process (available in August 2016), you will be able to self-register for the interview by selecting your preferred date and time. If you need assistance with scheduling, please call the Admission Office at (510) 652-4364.

Interviewing is a skill constantly developed throughout one’s life. We understand this may be one the first opportunities for students to speak about themselves for extended period of time to someone who does not know them. Here are some tips on preparing for our interview:

    • Be yourself: Don't say what you think the interviewer will find impressive. Instead speak about what you love to do, both in and out of school.
    • Ask questions: It is always a good idea to come to (any) interview with 1-2 prepared questions. You’ve gotten to know us over the past few months, but maybe you are curious about the track team; want to know more about visual arts; or are eager to hear another perspective about our welcoming community. Asking questions demonstrates to the interviewer that you genuinely given thoughtful consideration about College Prep and have a personal investment in your high school plans. It also offers another opportunity for you to learn something that you may have not known about us! Ideally, the interview should be equally useful both to the applicant and the Admission Committee.
    • Don't over prepare: Interviews are conversations. Sure, there are common questions in interview settings, but a natural conversation is much more memorable than listing your accomplishments or trying to sound impressive. The College Prep interview does not follow a script or use set questions. Although you will be speaking with a faculty member of our community (e.g. math teacher, the Head of School, Athletic Director), each interviewer has his or her own style and technique to get to know you. You should leave an interview knowing that you presented the best version of yourself to your interviewer.
