At College Prep, our college counseling process is meant to be individualized and introspective.
We hope that the process will extend beyond helping students find a college that suits them well - it is also an opportunity for students to reflect, grow, and learn about who they are. Our philosophy is that the students are at the center of this process from beginning to end. We expect them to take responsibility for meeting deadlines, researching colleges, registering for tests, and completing applications. We are here to support, encourage, and counsel students as they navigate the many available college options.
We begin meeting with students in the middle of the junior year. In addition to regularly scheduled individual meetings, we also facilitate periodic small group workshops for juniors and seniors covering various topics related to the college process. In addition, we hold several meetings for parents beginning with a brief introductory meeting in the sophomore year.
While keeping our focus on the student, it is important for all of us - parents, counselors, and students - to work collaboratively throughout the college process. Honest communication, willingness to keep an open mind, patience, and a positive, balanced demeanor all go a long way toward enabling the process to go as smoothly as possible.
