College Prep students have a long history of involvement in community service. Although there is no requirement, student participation is high.
Projects vary in scope and size, from a weekly activity to an annual event and can consist of small groups to the entire school.
Students work with many outside organizations such as: Oxfam,
Habitat-for-Humanity, Amnesty International, Kapnek Trust, and Rebuilding Together as well as plan their own projects.
Community service activities include:
- Freshmen Community Service - students spend the day at a local park, Frog Park, helping with clean-up and maintenance.
- Sophomore & Senior Community Service - students help maintain Greenpicker Trail at Point Reyes twice during their four years at College Prep, once as Sophomores and again as a part of the Senior Retreat.
- Junior Community Service – students join Rebuilding Together to help with various projects around the Bay Area.
- Men's and Women's Shelters - Every other week, College Prep students cook for a men's or women’s shelter with male students going to the men’s shelter and female students going to the women’s shelter. Although only juniors and seniors can go to the shelter to serve food and eat with the residents, many other students help with preparing and cooking the food.
-
Oxfam - Is a famine relief organization set up in Oxford, England by students wanting to help people in need. Oxfam finds ways to help groups help themselves. Each year we have an Oxfam Feast followed by an Oxfam Fast to help raise money for the organization.
- Adopt-A-Family - As the holiday season approaches, we coordinate
with local organzations and the Oakland Social Services agency to arrange families
that each class and the faculty can "adopt". Classes collect food,
clothes and presents and deliver to their families.
- Buildings toys for children in Zimbabwe through J.F. Kapnek Trust.
- Collecting, fixing, and helping deliver bikes to Botswana through Mike's Bikes.
- National Rebuilding Day - Each April, College Prep students join Rebuilding Together to rehabilitate and repair homes of low-income elderly, disabled, and families with children.
- CPS Day - "Community, Pride, and Service" is sponsored by the Student Affairs Committee, a joint student-faculty committee, on CPS Day, we celebrate the uniqueness of College Prep.
