Intraterm

Intraterm consists of special courses, field studies, internships, community service, and trips, offered to students during one week of the school year.

It is the school’s hope that Intraterm course offerings can provide students with opportunities for personal growth over and above those that the regular curriculum can accommodate. Students sign up for Intraterm classes in the fall and the program takes place in the week before Spring Break. Annual participation in Intraterm is a graduation requirement.

Intraterm FAQs

Q

What is Intraterm?

A

Intraterm consists of special courses, field studies, community service, and trips, offered to students during one week of the school year. It is the school’s hope that this weeklong course offering can provide students with opportunities for personal growth over and above those that the regular curriculum can accommodate. Since Intraterm is designed to allow students to cultivate diverse experiences, students are encouraged to try something new, which may not necessarily fall within the scope of their general interests.

Q

When does Intraterm occur?

A

This year Intraterm takes place in the spring, the week before break. This year classes will be held from Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12. Parents or guardians of students should not plan a family vacation during this week. Intraterm is a graduation requirement.

Q

Is Intraterm required?

A

Intraterm is a graduation requirement. All students are expected to participate fully in order to receive credit. All attendance rules and school rules apply. Illness must be excused by a parent’s note or a doctor.

Q

What is the Intraterm format?

A

For classes held on-campus the following format applies:

AM Classes: 9:00-11:30
PM Classes: 12:30-3:00
All Day Classes: 9-3pm

Please note, that the above refers to classes, which do not necessarily have an overnight component. While technically considered on-campus, many of these classes may have a field trip emphasis.

For Trips:
Trips are off-campus excursions that often take students out of the Bay Area, and in certain cases, the country. Trips are predominately overnight experiences. A trip is defined as any class, which has three or more overnights. Trips dates may fluctuate, and some intrude on spring break. Please check
the dates of all classes carefully before applying. No trip is allowed to depart before Monday, March 29 and should be at least four days long.

Q

How much does Intraterm cost?

A

The total cost of Intraterm may not exceed $700 per student. Few courses will charge this full amount, however, and many course offerings are designed to offer exciting and educational experiences at low cost. When reading the catalog, the listed cost will include all expenses such as payments to outside course leaders, van rentals, meals (when applicable) and equipment fees. What they will not necessarily cover is small
additional items that the student may choose to purchase as a supplement to the course they take—for instance—additional reading or research materials which are not required by the teacher, field trip supplies such as clothes and equipment, or, in the case of day trips or week long trips, items such as souvenirs or snacks. If you have questions about the cost please ask the instructor directly. If you must withdraw from a course, you will be responsible for any fees that College Prep has paid on your behalf.

Q

Will I have to do fundraising?

A

Faculty or Staff members can propose courses that charge a maximum of $700. Any course that costs $250 or more, however, must be willing to fundraise the equivalent of one full scholarship. Students who sign up for classes that charge
this minimum amount should expect to participate in fundraising activities. Classes should reserve fundraising events through Lisie Harlow in the main office and follow the regular reservation protocol, meaning they should not hold
fundraising events on the same day as other courses.

Q

Does Intraterm offer Financial Aid?

A

College Prep works hard to offer financial aid. Please contact Graciela Benito (graciela_benito@college-prep.org) before registering for Intraterm courses if you have any questions.

Q

How many trips can a student go on in their four years?

A

Students who have gone on a trip already won’t necessarily be excluded from going on future trips, but their chances will be diminished. When making trip assignments the Intraterm Committee will give preference to those students who have not gone on trips. The smooth function of the trip will be the ultimate consideration, so some decisions will be made based on balancing gender and age.

Q

Can I switch my class after assignments are posted?

A

Switching classes is highly discouraged and only under special circumstances can it be allowed. Additionally, because of the nature of the sign-up process, once a student is assigned to a particular class they have made a financial obligation to that course. If a student must switch classes they may be obligated
to pay the fee required of that course.
