Spirit is a pretty big deal at College Prep. Our Dean of Students, Mr. Chabon, signs all his email with the catchphrase “With Spirit, Dean Chabon.” Come to any College Prep sports game on a Friday afternoon, and boy, will you feel the spirit. We have a committee of students dedicated to making sure College Prep’s spirit is as celebrated as it is prevalent.
It’s not often that our campus gets the formal chance to display our class pride and our happiness to be in one another’s company. This past week, however, gave one and all that very opportunity. Each day of College Prep’s own Spirit Week had a unique set of dress-ups and activities ranging from lively games of dodge ball to a CPS version of the game show Family Feud. On Friday, the culmination of the week, each class decorated part of the campus the night before and then cheered on their class in a giant rally with music, hilarious feats of coordination and athleticism, and an abundance of spirit.

Freshmen covered the science building in pink, sophomores turned the deck by the gym into a maze of yellow and gold decorations, juniors made the Music Lawn look more like a blue ocean than a lawn, and the seniors took over the main courtyard, leaving it replete with a red car, a giant red stuffed dog, funny messages written on the windows, and almost every surface covered in red clothing, streamers, or other odds and ends.
Sure, other schools have spirit weeks; it’s not just College Prep. But something about our spirit is special. We’re not celebrating our football team (maybe because we don’t have one), but we’re giving ourselves an opportunity to express our pride in Prep, a bond that transcends the theoretical division between grades. The all-out dress ups, the plethora of decorations, and the passionate cheering of the entire community as we watch our classmates run relay races or try to find a piece of candy in a plate of whipped cream all prove that College Prep spirit is alive and thriving.
Even a few days later, the buzz of spirit week hasn’t left me, and I’ll be impatiently and excitedly waiting for the next one.
