Since its founding in 1986, The Partners Program has instilled in Oakland middle school students a joy of learning, helped those students gain an understanding of educational opportunities that are available to them, and equipped them with the skills, self-discipline and resources needed to realize these goals.
Partners works for students for three years, beginning the summer after their 6th grade year until the summer before they enter high school. The Partners Program consists of three distinct components: the Summer Academy (SA), Academic Year Mentoring (AYM), and the High School Advising program (HSA). All programs are free for the family.

Summer Academy (SA)

Each summer, the Partners Program holds an intensive full-day, 4-week experience for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students. During Summer Academy, our Partners Scholars take courses in math, English, socio-emotional learning, art, dance, and STEAM subjects. In addition, they participate in weekly elective clubs and attend interactive educational field trips.

Academic Year Mentoring (AYM)

During the academic year, Partners pairs our 7th and 8th Scholars with a trained high school mentor to work on homework and study skills. Academic Year Mentoring is held once a week, after school, for Scholars. To support learning and foster engagement, we use adaptive online software, teach financial literacy, and prepare Scholars for standardized tests.

High School Advising (HSA)

In our High School Advising program, Partners staff work with each scholar and their family to identify the high schools that would be the best fit for the scholar’s learning trajectory. Staff provides letters of recommendation, may accompany families to high school visits, and will assist with all transcript materials and financial aid applications.
