How to Apply

Our application process helps us learn about your interests, talents, and character. We’re excited to learn more about you!
Most students begin their high school search in the early weeks of eighth grade for admission into the ninth grade. Although ninth grade is our main entry point, we also accept applications for 10th and 11th grade and offer admission to qualified students when space is available. Since College Prep applicants compose their applications with great care and integrity, our Admission Committee reviews all applications holistically to assess if a candidate will be a good fit for our community.

Please click on the information below to learn more about each step of the application process. Further information and application guidance is provided in our Ravenna application portal.

HOW TO APPLY

List of 9 items.

  • Step 1: Getting Started

Most of the application process is conducted online through Ravenna. If your family has not created a Ravenna account, please be sure to visit ravenna-hub.com to create an account and start the application process with us.

Once you create your Ravenna profile, select the San Francisco Bay Area region and add The College Preparatory School to your list of schools. With College Prep added to your list of schools, you should be able to reserve space at various admission events and work on the different sections of the application at your convenience.

  • Step 2: Visit College Prep

College Prep offers a variety of programs for current prospective families. We invite current eighth grade families (and older) to events they believe will help them get to know us better. Attendance at our admission events is strongly encouraged, but not required for admission. Unless indicated otherwise, registration for our events is conducted through Ravenna.

All families are welcome to attend any other non-admission events hosted at College Prep, including arts showcases and performances and athletic games. For a list of non-admission events, please visit our school calendar.

  • Step 3: Complete & Submit Standardized Testing

College Prep requires all applicants take either the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) or the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) and submit all results as part of the application process. College Prep does not hold a preference for either exam, and one or both results can be submitted for consideration. To ensure College Prep receives all required scores, please provide the following recipient codes when registering for your exams: ISEE (052192) or SSAT (2484).

Transfer applicants for grades 10 or 11 may also submit PSAT, ACT, and/or SAT results when available, but must also submit ISEE or SSAT results.

Please note that we are unable to accept other high school entrance exams, including the HSPT in lieu of the ISEE/SSAT requirement.
  • Step 4: Submit an Application for Admission

Once the $90 application fee* is paid, a student is welcome to submit pieces of their admission application at his or her convenience and by the priority application deadline. When our office receives the required application section, a family will be able to see its receipt through the Ravenna Dashboard.

The priority application deadline of the 2018-19 admission season in Thursday, January 10, 2019, 11:59 pm, Pacific Standard Time. The portal for the 2018-19 admission season will be available by September 1.

*Limited fee waivers are available for families who qualify. Please contact the Director of Admission & Financial Aid for additional information.
  • Step 5: Schedule an Interview

Each applicant is required to be interviewed by a member of the College Prep faculty community in order to complete the application process.

The College Prep interview is an opportunity for applicants to ask questions about College Prep one-on-one and more broadly discuss their interests and goals for high school. Interviews always only one student with one interviewer and usually lasts around twenty-five minutes. It is typical for our interview to fall on a different day than the Student Visit which allows for students to process their campus experience and consider more thoughtfully how College Prep is a good fit for them.

Families can register for an interview slot beginning November 1 through Ravenna once the application fee has been paid.

  • Step 6: Apply for Financial Aid

The financial aid application is a two-step process that typically begins in early winter for both families applying for admission and returning families currently receiving financial aid. Detailed information about the financial aid application process is available in the financial aid section of our website.
  • Admission Season Timeline & Major Events

Many families juggle timelines for various high school admission processes simultaneously. We encourage prospective families to be selective about which admission events will help them and their child understand us best. Below is a list of important dates to keep in mind regarding the College Prep admission process. If you are not sure which event(s) to attend, please contact us.

  • Guidance for International Students

College Prep is home to a robust community of scholars from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, including a very small number of international students (defined as those who do not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status.) We invite students from all backgrounds and experiences to consider College Prep as a potential high school home.

  • Other Important Notes

    Additional Documents

The admission application provides our Admission Committee with copious amounts of insight into an applicant’s perspective, talent, skill, and potential. We craft our application to ensure we are able to capture as many different perspectives about the applicant as possible. Given the comprehensive nature of our application process, we discourage applicants from submitting additional letters of recommendation and other documents unless specifically requested in our application. If we anticipate needing additional information about an applicant, a member of the College Prep Admission Office will reach out to the applicant family directly.

Principles of Good Practice and Bay Area Athletic Recruitment Practices

College Prep joins many independent schools in the San Francisco Bay Area by sharing common recommendation forms and deadlines. We also agree to abide by the Principles of Good Practice and Bay Area Athletic Recruitment Practices to better streamline the admission process across independent schools.

College Prep welcomes new students only at the start of the school year; we do not accept applications or requests for midyear transfers.
