College Prep offers myriad leadership opportunities for our students both in and out of the classroom. Participation in co-curricular activities is fun, engaging, meaningful, and helps our students become generous of heart and spirit.
Student Council serves as an advisory body for the school administration, sharing the student perspective on issues ranging from school rules to events and programming. Student Council also organizes school-wide activities including dances, theme days, and spirit weeks. Composed of two representatives from each grade, co-presidents, a secretary/treasurer, and four members of the Spirit Committee, all positions on the Student Council are determined by elections. Student Council meets twice a week; all students and faculty are welcome to attend.
The Community Action Team (CAT) consists of two students from each grade who plan and implement awareness-raising campaigns, fundraisers, and service opportunities for the entire school. CAT strives to make a wide variety of volunteer and organizing opportunities available to any interested members of our community. Past projects include: coordinating Light the Night Walk for Leukemia, urban gardening with Phat Beets, and work with the global medical non-profit MedShare.
The Judiciary Committee is an advisory body comprised of students and faculty who meet regularly to examine how best to imbue mens conscia recti (a mind aware of what is right) in our community. Drawing on their own experiences, as well as from meetings with legal and ethical professionals, the Judiciary Committee leads community discussions about the value of rules and discipline to College Prep. The Committee also responds to calls from the administration to make recommendations in response to student disciplinary cases. The peer-elected student members and the faculty members have equal voices in discussions and in making recommendations.
The Curriculum Committee is composed of two students each from the junior and senior classes, faculty members chosen to represent each department, and the Academic Dean. The Committee serves primarily as a recommending body to the Head and Assistant Head of School and is charged with staying informed about the shape and substance of the academic program, reviewing proposals for new courses, responding to academic and programmatic issues that have whole-school impact, and vetting independent study and semester/year abroad programs for individual students.
The Technology Council includes students, faculty, staff, parents, and Board members. It serves as an advisory committee to the Head of School on technology-related matters including issues relevant to the development, implementation, and maintenance of the technology tools used in College Prep classrooms.
Diversity leadership opportunities include student-led workshops at CPS Day (theme for 2015-16: Justice for All), student discussion forums, diversity-related clubs, and the opportunity for students to attend the annual Student Diversity Leadership Conference put on by the National Association of Independent Schools.
College Prep Athletics offers sports leadership training for athletes who want to captain or otherwise lead their teams. Leadership training hones listening and communication skills, covers different leadership styles, and how to unify their teams.
Senior Mentors help incoming students transition to College Prep. Prior to the school year, new students are matched with Senior Mentors, who meet with their mentees in small groups and lead one or two fun excursions over the summer. Senior Mentors also plan and lead fun events for new students several times during the school year, including movie nights, dances, and games. New students also visit with their Senior Mentors informally throughout the year to ask questions and share experiences. Senior Mentors participate once a month in the ninth grade Connections and Advisory Program.
Senior Retreat Leaders help develop and facilitate the one-night retreats for freshman and sophomores. Retreat leaders receive extensive training and implement almost all of the programming during these memorable trips.
The Peer Tutoring Program forges connections within the student body by pairing students with their peers for academic assistance. In addition to their academic expertise, peer tutors are trained to help other students with organization and time management. All students are welcome to apply to become a peer tutor. Those accepted into the program receive training from the Director of Learning Services.
The English Department is piloting a Writing Center Program in 2015-16, staffed by upperclassmen, to provide one-on-one assistance as well as group workshops on topics related to grammar and writing. English Department faculty selected these talented, dedicated writing coaches from an applicant pool and will train the coaches as well as supervise their work throughout the year.
Admission Ambassadors represent College Prep at events such as open houses, parent tours, interview days, off-campus fairs, and more. Approximately 30 students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades receive extensive training to become ambassadors. Students who love admissions work but want a lesser commitment can become Campus Guides, giving tours to prospective students on their visiting days. Most ninth grade students are also involved in our Student Visit program, taking prospective students with them to classes for half-day visits.
